Slate · Windows + iPad

Your iPad.
More room for Windows.

Use your iPad as a wireless second monitor for Windows. Install Slate on both devices and connect over your local network or USB-C.

Move a Windows window to iPad. Illustrated workspace, not a screen recording.

Write on your PC.
Keep references on iPad.

Keep your source material beside the document you’re writing. Slate adds a real extended Windows display, so you can move a window onto your iPad.

Choose the connection for your desk.

Wi-Fi

Keep your desk cable-free

PC → router → iPad · local network

Both devices need to reach each other on the same local network. Your PC can use Ethernet while your iPad uses Wi-Fi.

USB-C

When the network is restricted

PC → data cable → iPad · no router required

Connect a compatible USB-C iPad with a data cable. Device trust and Apple Devices or iTunes on Windows are required.

When both connections are ready, Slate prefers USB-C.

Compare Wi-Fi and USB-C

Open both apps. Make room.

  1. Install on both devices

Install Slate for Windows and the iPad app, then open both.

  2. Approve the first connection

On the same local network, Windows automatically discovers the waiting iPad. Compare all six digits and approve on both devices. Trusted devices can reconnect without a new code.

  3. Extend your desktop

Press Windows + P and choose Extend. Arrange the screens in Windows Display Settings, then move a window onto iPad.

Compatibility and specifications.

Windows PC

Windows 11 x64 recommended. Windows 10 1903+ x64 is compatible, but general OS support has ended. ARM64, 32-bit, macOS and Linux hosts are not supported.

iPad

iPadOS 17 or later. USB requires an iPad with a USB-C port and a data-capable cable. A charge-only cable will not work.

Display and touch

1920×1080, 1920×1280 or 1920×1440 at 60fps, matched to the iPad’s aspect ratio. GPU H.264 hardware encoding and single-touch Windows clicks are supported.

Local streaming

Screen and touch data stay on your local network or USB connection and are not uploaded to Slate servers. Streaming needs no internet server; downloads, updates and subscription checks may use the internet.

Questions before you install.

Get connection help

Why does Slate need a display driver?

The virtual display lets Windows recognize iPad as a separate extended screen. Slate’s MSI installs the app and driver together.

What if SmartScreen shows a warning?

The current beta MSI is not yet code-signed, so Windows may warn you. Check the filename and SHA-256 checksum on the download page before deciding to install.

What if I see a black screen or an Extend message?

First press Windows + P and choose Extend. Duplicate is not a supported Slate mode. If the screen stays black in Extend, follow the display diagnostics on the support page.

How do I uninstall Slate and its driver?

Remove Slate from Installed apps in Windows Settings. Its virtual display driver is removed with it.
