Setting up for the first time? Download Slate for Windows and get Slate on the App Store, then follow the complete setup guide.
Frequently asked questions
1. My iPad isn't recognized over USB
Try the following in order:
- Unlock your iPad and confirm you tapped Trust on the "Trust This Computer?" prompt.
- Confirm that the iPad has USB-C and that the cable for your PC's USB-A or USB-C port supports data transfer. Some cables only charge.
- Windows requires the Apple Mobile Device Support driver. Slate does not install Apple software directly; if it's missing, install Apple Devices from the Microsoft Store or iTunes from Apple's official site.
- Try a different USB port — preferably one on the back of your PC.
2. The iPad screen stays black after connecting
The virtual display driver may not be active.
- Right-click the Slate icon in the Windows tray → Refresh display.
- Check Settings → System → Display in Windows — you should see an additional virtual display.
- If it isn't there, check the connection and reopen Slate on the iPad. If the problem persists, reinstall Slate for Windows.
3. The display is laggy or stutters
- For Wi-Fi, move closer to the router and pause large downloads. Try Ethernet on the PC or a USB connection.
- Confirm you're using a USB 2.0 or faster port with a certified data cable.
- Connect directly to your PC instead of through a USB hub.
- If another high-bandwidth USB device (external SSD backup, etc.) shares the same controller, disconnect it.
- Slate uses 1920 × 1080, 1920 × 1280, or 1920 × 1440 at 60 Hz based on the iPad's aspect ratio. Do not override this mode in Windows.
4. How do I start a free session?
Run Slate for Windows and connect your iPad over the same local network or USB-C to start a 15-minute free session with no payment method required.
When it ends, tap "Continue free" in the app to start another 15 minutes, or subscribe for uninterrupted use.
5. How do I cancel my subscription?
Subscriptions are managed through Apple ID settings → Subscriptions.
This is Apple App Store policy — we are not able to cancel a subscription on your behalf.
- On iPad: Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions
- Or open the App Store, tap your profile (top right) → Subscriptions
6. How do I request an App Store refund?
Apple processes payments and refund decisions for Slate subscriptions purchased through the App Store.
Sign in to Report a Problem and choose "Request a refund."
Eligibility can vary by country or region and Apple's policies. See Terms §6 for details.
7. What are the system requirements?
- Windows: Windows 11 x64 is recommended and fully supported. Windows 10 version 1903+ x64 remains compatible, but Microsoft's general OS support has ended. macOS and Linux hosts are not supported.
- iPad: iPadOS 17 or later. USB connections require a USB-C model.
- Connection: Wi-Fi on the same router or a USB-C data cable. The PC can use Ethernet.
- Network: screen streaming stays on the local network and requires no internet server. Allow Local Network access on iPad. Guest Wi-Fi, a VPN, or device isolation may block discovery.
8. Why did Slate warn about an existing virtual display driver?
Slate shows this once when it detects an MttVDD-based virtual display that existed before Slate was installed.
Sunshine/Moonlight or another virtual-display app may share the same Root\MttVDD device, control pipe, and settings with Slate, so running both at once can cause display or resolution conflicts.
If that happens, close one app and choose Refresh display from the Slate tray.
Slate does not block installation, and uninstall preserves the driver that was already present.
9. Does it work offline?
Yes. Screen streaming works over the local network or USB without an internet connection.
Screen data never leaves your devices — nothing is routed through our servers or any external network.
An internet connection may be required once for initial subscription verification.
10. Wi-Fi discovery or pairing does not work
Update Slate on both devices. Allow Local Network access for Slate in iPad Settings. Connect both devices to the same router; the PC can use Ethernet. Check guest-network isolation, VPN settings, and the Slate local discovery rule in Windows Firewall.
For the first connection, compare the six-digit codes and approve on both iPad and Windows. Declining or waiting more than 2 minutes stops pairing. To retry, tap Retry in Connection help on iPad, then choose Refresh display in the Windows tray. You can also forget saved PCs in Connection help.
See the wireless connection guide for an explanation of same-router discovery, Ethernet PCs, pairing, and local streaming.
